Participatory experience about life under siege
Helsinki June 16 – 21, 2022
Teatteri Universum, Perämiehenkatu 13
Finland is under occupation. You live in Marienhamn, on the Åland Islands. The city has become an open-air prison. Once in a while it is bombed. You stare at the sea. There is a wedding coming. You have to make everything out of it – it could be the last time you celebrate with family and friends.
Seaside Prison is an immersive experience for 8-16 participants. It takes place in an alternative reality where Åland is like Gaza. We use the method of larp in a black box theatre environment. You don’t need to have previous larp experience or prepare for the event. Our workshop will give you all the tools you need.
Seaside Prison is a Palestinian-Finnish-Norwegian collaboration.
Video production (Palestine)
Praise for the previous Palestinian-Finnish larp production Halat hisar:
“Halat hisar was my best and most intensive larp experience.”
– Jussi Ahlroth (Finnish player), HS Kulttuuri, 20.8.2016
“My reaction tells of the power of Halat hisar. A blurry yet scarily real image of living under occupation, under constant threat of violence, had taken a grip of my heart during the weekend.”
– Venla Leimu, Finnish player
“For me the game was a mirror of what my life seemed like looking from far away. Sometimes when you’re living in a unique situation, you stop perceiving things that are happening around you and to you as abnormal.”
– Zeid Khalil, Palestinian player
“I am absolutely privileged to have had the opportunity to be a part of this great work and I am so looking forward to more challenging, self-awakening experiences with larp.”
– Basel Irshaid, Palestinian player
“This contradiction of feelings and the conflicted projections that kept coming as the game unfolded made me open my eyes [...] and also try to look at my situation as a Palestinian living under the occupation in a different, absurd sense rather than as a reality.”
– Bisan Samamra, Palestinian player
